Field Trips

Snettisham November 2000

Beginners to birdwatching or the site being visited are made particularly welcome. Both local (car) and more distant (coach) trips offer you the added benefit of knowing you will be guided by experienced birdwatchers who know the site being visited and what you might expect to see. With coach trips you are free to wander off and "do your own thing" or, if you prefer, you can stay with the leader and benefit from their knowledge. There is always a good rapport between those attending, and the sharing of information and telescopes is always in evidence.

Thanks to those who supported our trips. PLEASE could others support our coach trips. We can't run them at a loss and really don't want to cancel.

It's a great way to watch and learn about birds, without the driving. You're also doing your bit to reduce traffic pollution!

Car and Coach Trips 2008/9

= Car Trip = Coach Trip

Saturday 27 March 2010 Oare Marshes, Near Faversham, Kent
Times: 09:30 - 12:30 Leader: TBC
The shallow pools of the Oare Marshes reserve provide an ideal stopping-off point for hundreds of migrating birds at this time of year, most of which can be seen well from the roadside view points, well appointed hides and the sea wall. Godwits, knot and golden plover could easily be joined by birds like jack snipe. Meet in the car park at the end of Harty Ferry Rd (Faversham). Easy walking. Up to 2 miles. No facilities.

Saturday 25 April 2010 Sandwich Bay, Kent
Times: 10:00 - 14:00 Leader: TBC
We will be meeting at the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory where the warden has offered to explain his work (ringing etc.) before we explore the general area including the beach. From Sandwich take Sandown Road, and then Guildford Road east towards the Sandwich Bay Estate. At the toll booth inform the operator that you are going to the observatory only for a reduction in the toll charge. The Observatory is just past the toll booth on the right. Easy walking . Upto 1 ½ mles. Toilets at observatory.

Sunday 23 May 2010 Rutland Water, Egleton, Ruttland
Times: 07:30 - 19:15 Leader: TBC

This Anglian Water reserve has a very nice visitor centre and a dozen or so hides from which to watch birds on and around the western end of the reservoir. We will be looking for birds like bullfinch, tree sparrow and little owl but there is always the chance of sighting the breeding ospreys which are now firmly established. Walking generally easy. Distance between 2 mile and 4 miles.

Sunday 27 June 2010 Minsmere RSPB Reserve, Suffolk
Times: 07:30 - 19:15 Leader: TBC

Sunday 27 June 2010 . 07:30 – 19:15
Minsmere in June is alive with noisy breeding birds including avocet, common tern and black-headed gulls, but less noisy are the breeding marsh harriers and bitterns that inhabit the extensive reed beds. This reserve with its range of habitat from beach through to woodland has so much to offer the visitor. The adjoining National Trust reserve at Dunwich Heath has a resident population of dartford warblers. Visitor centre with café/toilets/shop. Walking easy with boardwalks in places. Distance 2 to 4 miles. Dunwich Heath requires a short climb.
